Business Location Nordfriesland

Nordfriesland is one of the favourite holiday areas in Germany. The impressive Halligen (small islands off the coast) and the sandy beaches of Sylt, Amrum, Föhr and St. Peter-Ording attract people to come and marvel and to relax. Nordfriesland is in many senses "right on top of Germany".

Nordfriesland is an attractive business base. Tourism is the main industry on the west coast, providing 20 % of the regional income and 25,000 jobs. With a tourist intensity (number of overnight stays per inhabitant per year) of 67, Nordfriesland has top rating in Germany. With its many special health and tourist facilities, the region is very well positioned in the health industry sector.

The region also plays a pioneer role in Germany where regenerative energy is concerned. There is a well-established industry cluster here that is unique in the country, and Nordfriesland is also the headquarter of several renowned wind turbine manufacturers and associated enterprises. The wind energy sector employs 5,500 people in Schleswig-Holstein. Husum, the county town of Nordfriesland is also home to the international BZEE Renewable Energy Education Centre. Every two years the town's exhibition centre is host to HUSUMwind, the largest specialist wind energy trade fair in the world.

Mandy successful businesses have settled in Nordfriesland, and some of these deserve a special mention as the largest employers in the region. These include book printers Clausen & Bosse in Leck, and Husum-based windturbine manufacturers Vestas and Repower. The innovative biotechnology company Danisco (Niebüll) and stainless steel processors Wiedemann-Technik (Husum) are good examples of the many medium-sized businesses in the region. Nordfriesland's economic strength is also reflected in its 70 % working population.
